Peter Eckel asks for a HP Laserjet 4P driver that will work at 600dpi. Unless someone comes up with something better, I suggest modifying Nelson Beebe's dvijep. Beebe's drivers support a wide variety of printers, and the resolution they assume is configurable by just changing a #define in one of the files. You would probably have to change a couple of other things - for example, the commands generated to load fonts probably implicitly assume or specify 300dpi - but it should be pretty simple; Beebe's code is well written and easy to understand and modify. -- Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Oct 1994 14:45:25 -0100 From: Fabricio Chalub Barbosa do Rosario Subject: TrueType vs. METAFONT One of the biggest problems with TeX is the size of its METAFONT fonts. On my computer, I renderized a full set of Computer Modern for a 300dpi Laser (which I do not have yet), and the PK total font size grew up to 5000kb! Imagine then the total smash that will be when I buy a 600 dpi!! Due to an obvious lack of disk space, I decided to try another TeX package, PCTeXWIN, which uses TrueType fonts as a replacement for the METAFONT fonts so well designed by Knuth on late 70, 80 and util 90! Actually, the size of the TTF is much smaller than the PK's, but since I don't have a laser printer I cannot determine whether type produces the best output. I think that because the way METAFONT fonts are made, they are much, much better than any TrueType version since TrueTypes are designed by hand and their magnifications steps don't take care of details like serifs and degrees of roundness etc, as METAFONT do. (I'm sorry, I don't understand nothing of METAFONT nor TT, so excuse my mistakes). Anyone who has already tryed both versions can show me the best? (tough MF seems to me to be the BEST ever!) A one day seminar by the BCS Electronic Publishing Specialist Group in conjunction with The University of Southampton to be held on Thursday, November 24th starting at 10:30am for 11:00am Chilworth Manor Residential Conference Centre, Chilworth, Southampton, Hampshire. ---------------- Is multimedia the key to riches? What *really* constitutes multimedia and where is it best applied? Are our computers actually ready for multimedia yet? These are some of the questions which we hope will be answered at this seminar. Speakers (who include researchers, book publishers, record producers and electronic information publishers) will cover the technical requirements for multimedia, the business requirements necessary to produce good multimedia packages, and the use of multimedia in commerce, entertainment and education.
